Christina is back y’all and she is dishing about last month’s book below!
Cook your book, second edition!
Who knew it was possible to talk more about how you’ll host your book club meeting than the book itself!? This has been such a fun addition and How to Walk Away by Katherine Center gave us a great platform to cook-the-book!
A majority of How to Walk Away takes place in a hospital where the main character, Margaret, is recovering from an airplane crash. No, we did not serve jello and mashed potatoes. A club member described this book as ‘reading a hallmark movie’ which isn’t a bad thing if you like a sappy romance! While two of the girls ranked it a 4, the other girls thought it was too predictable and eerily similar to Maybe in Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reed (our first book club read). Overall, our group decided to rate it 2 stars out of 5.
Although we joked about serving ‘hospital food’ on plastic cafeteria trays, we decided to recreate a meal that Margaret and her sister Kit shared at their family lake house. Unfortunately, we didn’t have a lake house to host at (c’mon girls, let’s step it up!!) so instead, we had a Valentines Day book club meeting. If you haven’t read the book, this seems like a random theme but you’ll see there’s a party thrown for Margaret and although the calendar didn’t read February 14, the theme of the party was Valentine’s Day!
As you dive into the book, you’ll see that Margaret’s sister Kit brings a lot of lightness and laughter to her sister in the hospital. Amongst her surprising conversation topics, she is constantly bringing Margaret takeout food! For us, egg rolls with a sweet and sour dip was the way to go to kick off the night. Costco has the best egg rolls, so so good!
For our main entree, we cooked a delicious vegetable soup; it was a perfect compliment to these chilly nights we’ve been having in South Louisiana! In the book, the soup is served as a vegan dish but we added beef to it! Sorry Margaret and Kit, no vegans in this book club!
For dessert, we baked the most delicious s’mores skillet brownie. There is no other dessert more fitting to eat at a lake house than s’mores! You’ll see in the recipe that you broil the skillet toward the end…don’t broil it for too long like we did! But if you do, it’s an easy fix! Scrape those marshmallows off and start over!
Even though this book was only got 2/5 stars from our club, it was a great night and love was in the air during out Valentine’s Day book club meeting!
